Lisa I Launch

We had a successful launch on Tuesday. The ignition sequence went without a hitch, motor burn nominal and the parachutes deploy successfully bringing the rocket back safely.

Another test is planned for Sunday, with the avionics installed and roll control implemented.

Project Overview

The project evolved from student experimentation with model rocketry. A special topic course was run in 2009 by the Mechanical Engineering Department to lay the groundwork for the development of a guided sounding rocket. Two launches were conducted to test the propulsion and recovery systems.

Summer scholarships awarded to two students culminated in the successful implementation of roll control on a launch in February 2010. Development continued over the 2010/11 summer with a thorough overhaul of all systems being carried out by students in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.

Two Ph. D. students are now working on the project with the backing of industry sponsor Rocket Lab Ltd.

Two summer students were tasked with developing a supersonic rocket over the 2011/12 summer. The aim was to develop launch procedures including sea recovery, and collecting flight data through the sound barrier.
